LEAD: Businessland Inc., a leading computer retailer, is expected to announce substantial layoffs at a news conference Thursday and may close some of its less active stores, people close to the industry said. The move by Businessland, based in San Jose, Calif., comes as personal computer sales have softened nationwide, but also stems from the chain's loss of the Compaq Computer Corporation account in April, said Seymour Merrin, a computer retail consultant.

LEAD: Ames Department Stores Inc. cut 85 jobs in its corporate offices and announced plans to rename the last surviving Zayre stores as Ames outlets. The discount retailer, acknowledging that it had overestimated customer loyalty to the 392 Zayre stores it bought in 1988, also said that a sluggish fourth quarter would prevent the company from showing a profit this year.

LEAD: Ansett World Aviation Services of Australia has ordered $110 million worth of jet engines from Pratt & Whitney to power as many as 12 Airbus aircraft, Pratt & Whitney said. Ansett ordered PW4000 engines for six A300-600R Airbus twinjets, a total of 14 engines including spares, and took options on 12 more engines to power another six planes, said Pratt & Whitney, a unit of the United Technologies Corporation.

LEAD: The All Nippon Airways Company bought the Westin Hotel in Washington, for an undisclosed sum, a company spokesman said. The name of the 416-room hotel will be changed to the ANA Hotel in January 1991. The company plans to expand its ownership of hotels in overseas cities where it flies or plans to fly, the spokesman said.
