Durgabāi Deshmukh (née Gummididala, 15 July 1909 – 9 May 1981) was an Indian freedom fighter, lawyer, social worker and politician. She was a member of the Constituent Assembly of India and of the Planning Commission of India.
A public activist for women's emancipation, she founded the Andhra Mahila Sabha (Andhra Women's Conference) in 1937. She was also the founder chairperson of the Central Social Welfare Board. In 1953, she married C.D. Deshmukh, the first Indian governor of the Reserve Bank of India and Finance Minister in India's Central Cabinet from 1950 to 1956.

WASHINGTON, July 15. -- Protest against the rule put into effect by Immigration Commissioner Williams at New York requiring each immigrant to have $25 in cash before being permitted to land from Ellis Island was entered with the President to-day by Leon Kamaiky, editor of The Jewish News of New York, who was accompanied to the White House by Representative Bennet.

PARIS, July 15. -- Prince Helie de Sagan expressed great satisfaction at the birth of a son to-day, and immediately conveyed the good news to his intimate friends in Paris. Accompanied by several of these, he proceeded by automobile to St. Chero to express his gratification. Many telegrams of congratulation have arrived here for the Prince and Princess, and these have been forwarded to the chateau.

MUSKOKA, Ontario, July 14. -- Miss Elizabeth Stewart of Pittsburg, who was with Lieut. Sutton on the night he met his death in Annapolis, talked frankly with a NEW YORK TIMES reporter to-day at her boarding house in Staney Brae. She said without apparent reservation or without excessive questioning that she could throw no light upon the death of the Lieutenant of Marines.

Yesterday's stock market was to all intents and purposes the market in United States Steel. Transactions in this one issue totaled nearly 125,000 shares out of total sales of some 567,000 shares. The stock rose to the new high record price of 711/4, and influenced directly the rest of the industrial department, which was more active and stronger by far than the railway list.

The improvement in the iron and steel trade which has been marked in recent weeks has been recognized in advances of a dollar a ton in the prices of a number of the standard products. This is the first general upward movement since the latter part of May, when prices were put up about the same amount.
